Matthew Beck came into work at the the connecticut lottery headquarters armed with a Glock semi-automatic handgun, a butcher knife, and three clips of ammunition with the malicious intent on harming people who he perceived to have done him wrong.
On March 6, 1998, Matthew Beck, an enraged accountant at the connecticut lottery headquarters decided to take matters into his own hands as he aimed to get even with his superiors, killing 4 of them before ultimately ending his own life in the incident. Beck, 35, had just come back from a four-month medical leave that was stress related. He filed a grievance report that involved his demotion from accountant to data processor successfully, and was awaiting back pay.
Beck, who had worked for the lottery for eight years came into work just like any other day. Within a half hour he left his office and made his way to the executive suites where his supervisors were Witnesses said that the killings were definitely pre-meditated as Beck seemed to be executing a plan to a tee. He first walked into the office of Michael Logan, the information services manager who had originally denied Beck’s grievance. He shot and stabbed Logan and then made his way to an area where chief financial officer, and one term mayor or New Britain Linda Mlynarczyk sat. Beck pointed the gun at her and was heard saying “bye-bye” and shot three times.
Beck then made his way to meet with Rick Rubelmann, the vice president of operations, a person who Beck had once appealed to for help. He shot and killed Rubelmann and then chased his last victim who had fled out to the parking lot. Otho Brown, the state’s lottery president was attempting to get away from the disgruntled employee. As he ran, Brown tripped and fell to the ground. He turned over onto his back and put his hands up towards Beck. He pled to Beck “don’t kill me, don’t kill me.” Beck responded “awe shut up” and pulled the trigger. Police closed in on Beck just as he turned the gun onto himself and pulled the trigger. He later died at the Hartford Hospital.
In the months preceding the tragic shooting, Beck was quoted on two separate occasions by newspapers stating that lottery players were being cheated. He claimed that the lottery was exaggerating potential winnings in an attempt to boost sales, and that store owners were taking winning tickets and keeping them for themselves for various lottery game He also complained about unfair treatment at work. The Hartford Courant described Beck as frothing at the mouth and stated that his eyes were “wild” while The Day of New London described him as “scruffy” in appearance.

After the massacre, Beck’s father, who shared a house with his son, was questioned extensively. He said that his son did not hint at anything when he had left for work that morning. He said that everything seemed normal, although he did admit that his son had battled depression his whole life and attempted suicide on multiple occasions. He recalled saving his son’s life during his last attempt and stated “that might have been a mistake,” through the tears.
